ARNAQQUASSAAQ FROM GREENLAND

27.11.2022

The ‘Arnaqquassaaq from Greenland’ family eco and art workshop, led by artist Kamila Szelągowicz and Adam Jarniewski, author of the book entitled ‘Letters from Greenland’.

Arnaqquassaaq, also called Sedna or Sanna, is the goddess of the sea and sea animals from the Greenlandic legends. This goddess sits at the bottom of the sea and has for centuries ensured that the indigenous inhabitants of the Arctic only obtain as much fish and marine mammals as they need to survive. During the workshop, the participants created their version of Arnaqquassaaq and wove animals from the deep sea into her hair, reflected on the meaning of the word moderation and the consequences of desolating nature.

The workshop was a good opportunity to talk about the world of beliefs – both the Greenlandic and Polish ones. Perhaps it was possible to find similarities between Arnaqquassaaq and the Slavic Marzanna…?
