The Ethnosensual: “Birds in a Garden” plein-air sculpting workshop

11.08.2022

Folk art therapy workshops during the “Birds in a Garden” plein-air sculpting meeting, part of a cycle entitled “The Ethnosensual”. The workshops were open to every interested participant of any age. This event was adapted to persons with disabilities and special needs.

A plein-air sculpting workshop is a unique opportunity to learn about a sculptor’s technique, the secrets of working with a chisel, and to listen to stories about the nature that surrounds us. We invited famous folk artists from Kashubia, Kociewie and Żuławy – Stanisław Śliwiński, Leszek Baczkowski and Mieczysław Woźniak – to take part in the event. Not only did the artists present their skills but they also narrated about their passion.

The leitmotif of this plein-air workshop were the birds inhabiting our gardens, parks and forests. Under the sculptors’ supervision, everyone created fairytale wooden bird sculptures, painted by themselves with most extravagant colors and patterns. The participants took the painted birds home with them.

Workshop leaders:

Stanisław Śliwiński – sculptor, folk artist, president of the Gdańsk Branch of the Folk Artists Association. He has been working as a sculptor for over forty years. He has developed his unique, original form of artistic expression, kept within the framework of folk sculpture convention.

Mieczysław Woźniak – a sculptor linked to the regional culture of Pomerania, one of the few sculptors working in the territory of Żuławy. He takes part in fairs, festivities and markets, not only presenting his works but also his live sculpting skills. Member of the Folk Artists Association since 2015.

Leszek Baczkowki – a sculptor who identifies with the culture of Kociewie region, member of a small group of folk artists. Very prolific as an artist, creates works that are embedded in the traditional Pomeranian as well as general Polish folk themes.
